The design decision
Every business object is a document
A sale, an invoice, a purchase order, a maintenance job — all of them have a number, a state, an owner and a history. Treating them the same way means one audit trail, one approval engine and one search, rather than six of each.
It also means routine work can be automated safely: a reminder that fires when a payment is late, an escalation when an approval sits too long. The rules read the same records everything else reads.
